News New Covent Garden Plans Move Forward

Vinci St Modwen has submitted a planning application to redevelop New Covent Garden Market in south London that, if approved, could see Vinci Construction start work on the site next year.

Plans for the site by the 50/50 joint venture between St Modwen and Vinci plc include providing over 50,000 sq ft of market facilities consolidated for 200 tenants.

The market, which when complete should employ 2,500 people, will sit alongside a new food quarter, to be known as The Garden at New Covent Garden Market.

The redevelopment of the 57 acre site which is the UK’s largest fruit, vegetable and flower market is a key part of the wider redevelopment of the whole Nine Elms area.

St Modwen chief executive Bill Oliver said: “Over the last 12 months, VSM has worked closely with CGMA and the market community, as well as key stakeholders, to refine these plans and present a world class development that will create jobs, attract investment and transform this important part of Nine Elms.”
