Mansell has secured a £18.5m contract to design and build a mixed use development in Islington for Mortar Developments.
The project at 465/465a Caledonian Road will provide 350 student accommodation units across 12 levels alongside retail and office space. The existing buildings will be demolished with the exception of a three-storey façade which is being retained and incorporated into the new development.
The accommodation will comprise a mixture of 76 studio flats, 38 adaptable units and 236 units in cluster arrangements. The development will also include 673sq m of retail area on the ground floor as well as 589 sq m of office space across three floors at the north end of the site.
This project aims to achieve a BREEAM “Excellent” rating and is planning to employ low and zero carbon technology energy options in the form of solar photovoltaic panels and a combined heat and power system.
Demolition is currently underway. The contract will be handed over in June 2013, for occupation in the 2013/2014 academic year.
