News Housing And Planning Minister Gavin Barwell Backs Build Rent During Resi 2016 Speech

Gavin Barwell MP has used his first major speech since becoming housing and planning minister to back the build-to-rent housing sector.

At the RESI 2016 conference in Newport, Wales, Barwell said the country’s housing ambitions would “never be achieved” without a significant boost for institutional investment in the private rented sector.

“We need to build more homes of every single type and not focus on one single tenure,” said the MP for Croydon Central, so we need “to make sure we have a good, thriving private rented sector.”

Barwell, who is also minister for London, singled out the Vantage Point scheme in Archway, north London for praise. The 118-home project, delivered by Essential Living, sits immediately above Archway Tube station and has opened for lettings this month. The minister said this “must be the start.”

“Recent growth in the bespoke rental market has been impressive,” Barwell went on to say, “but this progress must be expanded.”

Other speakers this year include former Chancellor Nigel Lawson, London deputy mayor for housing James Murray and YO! Sushi founder Simon Woodroffe.
