News Costain Jv Secures £48m Network Rail Electrification Contract

A joint venture between Costain, Alstom and Babcock has secured a £48 million contract with Network Rail for Phase Three of the West Coast Power Supply Upgrade scheme.

The project is part of a £9.4bn investment by Network Rail to improve the electrification of British railways.

The joint venture, ABC Electrification, will electrify lines in the North West of England to support more frequent services and the longer trains that are planned for the West Coast Main Line.

Work is expected to start in early 2013 and is scheduled for completion in 2016.

Andrew Wyllie, chief executive of Costain, said: “The award of this contract provides further demonstration of Costain’s position as a major player in the rail sector, delivering integrated services for complex and large-scale infrastructure projects which are vital to the UK economy.”
