News Bristol Rovers Gets Approval New Stadium Land Next Uwe’s Frenchay Campus 0

Plans to build a new £40m stadium for Bristol Rovers FC on land next to the University of the West of England’s (UWE) Frenchay campus, have been approved.

South Gloucestershire councillors voted 12-1 for the 21,700-seater stadium to be approved subject to certain conditions.

These include provisions for the local transport infrastructure and the prevention of uncontrolled on-street car parking near the stadium.

The stadium may also house Bristol Rugby Club.

Plans also include a club shop, gym, convenience store, a 1,000 space car park, as well as teaching space for UWE.

The plans now depend on the club being able to sell its current site at the Memorial Ground to Sainsbury’s. A decision on plans to redevelop the site into a Sainsbury’s supermarket is expected to be made in September.

Depending on this the new stadium could be built in time for the 2014/15 season.
