Builder and Engineer now lets readers bookmark any story on the site to a range of social bookmarking sites. These are designed to let users mark stories they found interesting with searchable tags, thus pointing them out to other people who might also like the stories.

Many news outlets are making use of these sites in this way, as they allow for a wider range of perspectives on a single issue, since related stories can be compared and cross-referenced.

Builder and Engineer has selected a range of common social bookmarking sites: if your favourite is missing, please let us know. All of the sites below are free to join, but may charge for advanced features. Inclusion of any site does not constitute a recommendation by Builder and Engineer or Excel Publishing Company Limited.

  • Digg - one of the earliest social bookmarking sites. Specialises in technology, science and business stories: stories about record breaking buildings, or mergers between companies would fit well
  • Reddit - science, technology and politics site. American bias, run by Wired magazine. Would suit stories on new techniques in building or design
  • del.icio.us - primarily designed for keeping collections of bookmarks accessible from any computer
  • Facebook - social networking site, designed to let people keep in touch. Has a link share feature, so you can comment on stories and let your contacts see what you thought of them. There is also a Builder and Engineer group on the site, for discussion with the B&E staff or about topics covered in the magazine/website
  • Stumbleupon - designed for people to submit links they found interesting on any topic. It then provides pointers to other articles you might enjoy
  • Newsvine - service that allows users to comment on news article, or add extra information to them, for example, eye-witness reports of an event. By commenting on articles, users encourage others to visit the original site, whilst hopefully minimising bias in the original story with their comments
