Women wanting to join the construction industry gained a boost today when ConstructionSkills won a slice of a £10 million fund to encourage recruitment in to the sector.

The two-year scheme is part of the Government’s Women and Work programme. It aims to help up to 10,000 women find new careers or progress their careers in sectors where they are currently under represented.

ConstructionSkills will run projects that will provide women with the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the industry, including training, personal development programmes, mentoring schemes and female-only bursaries for technical qualifications.

The organisation estimates that increasing women’s participation in the construction industry could be worth between £15bn and £23bn a year to the UK economy.

Alan Johnson, Secretary of State for Education & Skills said: “Over the next two years we are investing £10m to help remove the barriers many women still face in getting in and getting on in the workplace. It’s about getting a better deal for women and for all of us, as this has the ptential to bring a greater rate of return to our economy and society as a whole."
