London women in construction get training boost E-mail

Women in the construction received a boost with funding to help them to advance their careers. The construction industry was named one of the top five areas in which women are under-represented in the work place, accounting for just 10% of the sector’s workforce.

Train to Gain, a service provided by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC), launched a pilot scheme aimed at contractors to redress the inequality and to train women to take more senior positions.

However, the pilot scheme is currently limited to women workers in the affluent region of London. LSC regional director for skills Philippa Langton said: “We are one of the most successful economies in the world and London’s productivity rate is off the page, yet we have the lowest employment rate in the country, just 69% compared to 74% nationally.

“Londoners need to get some of the really fantastic job opportunities that are taking place in London.”

The LSC said it will contribute 75% towards its Women’s Pilot course.
