Up to 10,000 jobs could be created and 1,400 homes and a shopping centre built to transform a part of Birmingham affected when a car plant closed down.

Around 6,000 workers lost their jobs in Longbridge when MG Rover collapsed in April 2005.

The 15year plan developed by Birmingham City Council, Worcestershire County Council and Bromsgrove Council could see a total of £500m spent transforming 140 hectares within the mainly former industrial area, into a prosperous mixed-use community.

The plans for Longbridge will also deliver a new learning quarter to include the relocated Bournville College, a 25 hectare regional investment site for high tech businesses, three new parks, and a park and ride scheme.

A museum called the Austin Heritage Centre to celebrate the area's history in car making is also planned as well as a wide variety of improvements to the public transport system.

Councillors are expected to officially back the plans over the next few weeks. The proposals will then be sent to the government for approval.
