Developers Langtree McLean were last night granted outline planning permission for the first phase of a £250 million scheme to regenerate Liverpool’s derelict International Garden Festival site. The consent is to build 1,308 flats and 65 houses on land at Otterspool which has fallen into neglect since the 1984 festival.
The council also granted full planning permission for the restoration of the Japanese and Chinese Gardens described as "jewels in the crown" of the event. The developer said the scheme create a new public park for the city, in time for Liverpool’s Capital of Culture year, 2008. Langtree Mclean is a joint venture between the site owner Haydock-based Langtree Developments and the David McLean group. The development is not without its objectors and protesters staged a number of demonstrations outside Liverpool as the scheme was being debated.
A start is expected on site later this year. |
