£58m brownfield development gets the nod E-mail

A former Saint Gobain Pipelines site in Wales is a step closer to becoming a £58m housing and commercial development after planners granted consent yesterday.

Caerphilly County Borough Council’s planning committee approved an outline application by the Bird Group of Companies, based in Llantrisant, Monmouthshire, to develop more than 17 acres of brownfield land on both sides of the Ebbw River.

The Bird Group aims to regenerate 13.2 acres of land between the A467 and the western bank of the Ebbw north of the Pontymister Industrial Estate and a further four acres on the eastern bank.

The group is proposing to build 236 homes on 10 acres on the western bank which is currently overgrown and derelict and contains the former Saint-Gobain Pipelines’ site which the Bird Group acquired in January 2005.  The remaining 3.2 acres will be open space.
