Five east London councils have called for a firm financial commitment to ensure that the Olympic Park venues are viable after the Games. The five London host boroughs of Tower Hamlets, Greenwich, Hackney, Newham and Waltham Forest were presenting evidence to a Government Select Committee on preparations for the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012. The five boroughs are calling for: *Commitment to an appropriate sum to transform the Olympic Park. *Clear business plans to ensure that the Olympic Park and individual venues are accessible and affordable to local people and sports groups post 2012; *More projects like Newham Sports Academy to help talented sports individuals break the barriers of low income and inadequate support; *The closest possible involvement in decision making where it has a direct bearing upon legacy; *Adequate funding to meet the extra demands that the Games will put on council services. Planning applications for the detailed design of the Aquatic Centre and the main stadium are expected in the next few months. |
