Balfour Beatty scoops Olympic double E-mail

Balfour Beatty will deliver half an £800m infrastructure package that will shape the Olympic Park.

It joins Skanska and Edmund Nuttall in delivering four lots of infrastructure projects that will connect the venues and the park to the neighbouring East London community.

Balfour fought of competition from Sir Robert McAlpine, Edmund Nuttall, Fitzpatrick and Kier to construct the bridges that will link the park to the Main Stadium.

It also pipped Morgan Est, Norwest Holst and Hochtief to construct a series of rail overbridges around the park.

An ODA spokesman told B&E online the decision to award two of the four contracts to Balfour Beatty represented the scale of the work.

He said: “They are massive packages, some of the biggest of the whole project. Balfour Beatty is a big company and they obviously impressed in the procurement stage. The whole thing is both open and transparent and there is a chance for every company and from that competitive process, Balfour picked up the contract.”

Construction work on the structures, bridges and highways is expected to begin by early 2009.

The contractors for each package include:
Lot 1 – Skanska
Olympic Park north civils, roads and bridges, which includes 5km of roads, two land bridges; one road bridge; two underpasses; retaining walls and other ancillary works.
Lot 2 – Edmund Nuttall
Olympic Park south civils, roads and bridges, which includes approximately 3km of loop roads, four road bridges; one footbridge; one underpass; retaining walls and other ancillary works.
Lot 3 – Balfour Beatty
Rail overbridges, which includes three land bridges; two road bridges; retaining walls and other ancillary works.
Lot 4 - Balfour Beatty
Main Stadium Area Bridges, which includes one road bridge; four footbridges; retaining walls and other ancillary works.
