Government scheme to help women become engineers E-mail

Women will be given help to become engineers, Minister for Women Ruth Kelly said yesterday.

The Shaping a Fairer Future report commissioned by the Women and Work Commission published yesterday said: “From May 2007, careers advice will be free from stereotypical images and messages that assume there are 'jobs for girls' and 'jobs for boys'.”

It said the government-backed Women in Science, Engineering and Technology is part of a scheme to create more quality part-time jobs for women.

The government is giving nearly £500,000 to help women into work. It said it will help women opt for “non-stereotypical” career routes.

The report backed Omagh College, Women Builders, Centrica and the University of Southampton, which it said are looking to provide support to women who want to break into non-traditional subjects such as IT, construction, engineering and science.

The government has developed a new diploma in Construction and the Built Environment, which it hopes will encourage women into the industry.

The government backing comes on top of support for women to gain other qualifications such as A Levels.

The report said: “We are providing £20m for a Level 3 training pilot in London which will deliver over 7,000 A Level equivalent qualifications for women returners and those with low skills. Engineering, construction, transport and logistics are all priority areas. The pilot will ensure that women are equipped to take up opportunities in relation to delivery of the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.”
