Funny Girls not laughing over asbestos breaches E-mail

Magistrates have ordered a contractor and client to pay more than £35,000 after employees were exposed to asbestos during refurbishment work above the existing Funny Girls nightclub in Blackpool.

Contactor Eclipse Developments was fined more than £21,000, and client Pink Leisure will pay nearly £15,000 for the breaches.

The prosecution comes after the HSE inspected the site of a new nightclub in Blackpool in April 2005 following a complaint. The inspection uncovered a large amount of asbestos on the site.

HSE lead construction inspector for Lancashire Mark Cottriall said: "Both companies had had previous advice in relation to asbestos on the site following a visit from HSE in January 2002,when a full survey was carried out and an amount of asbestos removed.

"Unfortunately nobody had referred back to the existing survey which identified asbestos being present in the upper circle. The prosecution was taken because of this failure and the consequent exposure of up to a dozen employees working in the construction being exposed to asbestos containing materials."
