Magistrates have ordered GDM Partnership Building Services Consultants to pay nearly £20,000 after a surveyor fell from the roof of a building.

The Kent based consultant was yesterday fined £15,000 and ordered to pay £4,230 in costs by Basingstoke Magistrates for breaches of Health and Safety legislation.

The incident happened on 1 June 2005 at an unoccupied commercial building in Basingstoke. David Prince was taking measurements of the roof when he fell approximately 6m from the edge. He suffered fractures to his left wrist, left humorous and pelvis.

An investigation into the accident by the Health and Safety Executive found that apart from warning all staff to be careful, GDM took no measures to prevent their employees from falling from the roof.

Phill Leonard, HM Inspector of Health and Safety, said: "This accident could have been prevented if simple precautions had been taken. Falls from height continue to be the biggest workplace killer. Last year 46 people lost their lives following a fall from height and over 3000 workers suffered serious injury."
