Magistrates ordered a Blackpool contractor to pay more than £22,000 following the death of an employee during work at Hutton Grammar School near Preston.

R P Tyson Construction was fined £16,000 and ordered to pay £6,446 costs at Preston Crown Court after pleading guilty to a charge under the Health and Safety at Work Act.

The case was brought following the death of the company's employee Anthony Isherwood, who on the 29 November 2004 was crushed to death after a steel beam fell on top of him.

Following this case, The Health and Safety Executive, are warning construction companies to ensure that a proper risk assessment is carried out, updated and maintained during building work.

HSE Inspector Roger Jamson said: " It is important that anyone in control of a construction site assesses the particular risks involved at their specific site of work and that this is kept up to date as circumstances change."
