Aggregate Industries received a fine of £10,000 and ordered to pay £5,000 costs by Leicester Crown Court after employee Glen Whitelock had his hand crushed on 16 December 2006. The incident happened when the hook securing the lid of the cement mixer he was cleaning failed.
Health and Safety Executive inspector Elizabeth Hornsby said: "This was an entirely avoidable accident which resulted in man losing the use of one of his hands. Injuries from poorly-maintained equipment remains a significant and regular problem nationwide and companies must ensure that equipment is regularly inspected and maintained so workers aren't exposed to this kind of risk." |
