Trade union Unite is holding a rally in Manchester in January to campaign against the exploitation of agency workers.
Unite, which is the only union in the construction industry signatory to every working rule agreement, fears there will be social unrest unless employers and government take action to stop the exploitation of agency workers. The union says employers are increasingly turning to agency labour that is employed on inferior terms and conditions than directly employed workers. Unite national officer Tom Hardacre says the union is calling for legislation to ensure the equal treatment of temporary and agency workers. He said: “This march by our members is intended to send a message to employers in the construction industry that they should respect our agreements.” National agreements were designed to provide a level playing field for all construction workers and guaranteed minimum standards on pay, health, safety and welfare. However, these agreements are being undermined by the use of agencies. March and rally When: 2 January, 2008 at 11am Starts: Whitworth Park, Oxford Road, Fallowfield, Manchester Ends: Manchester's Peace Garden, off St Peter's Square |
