Wednesday, 14 November 2007

A shortlist of five designs has been chosen for the next stage in the Sheffield Parkway footbridge competition. They are:

* Tim Norlund Jensen, Denmark with Ramboll Whitby Bird, London
* Satellite Architects, London with Elliott Wood Partnership
* DLG Architects, London
* Arup Associates, London
* Tony Leung, Hong Kong with Ove Arup & Partners, Sheffield

Competitors were set the challenge of designing a bridge that is 'a pleasure to cross, responds to the local landscape, is deliverable and beautiful to look at'.   The bridge will provide a route over the A630 Sheffield Parkway, a busy dual carriageway which links the heart of Sheffield City Centre with the M1 motorway. The competition was open and international leading to 109 entries from around the world. Designs were reviewed and discussed during five rounds of judging over two days which led to the final selection.

The competition is being organised on behalf of Sheffield and Rotherham Councils, with support from Yorkshire Forward.

The shortlisted teams will each receive a £7,000 honorarium, and will meet with the judging panel on 11th December to discuss their concepts further. A winner will be selected shortly afterwards.
