A £3.5m restoration scheme to protect and improve some of the historic buildings in Rotherham’s High Street has been launched. Dovetailing with Yorkshire Forward’s Rotherham Renaissance project, the Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) will see essential repair work carried out to help protect and preserve some of the town centre’s heritage. It is funded by Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council, the Heritage Lottery Fund and Yorkshire Forward. Council leader and Renaissance Town Team chairman Cllr Roger Stone said: “The goals of Renaissance and our council aren’t just about the future. They’re about protecting and celebrating what Rotherham already has and something we’re very proud of – its heritage."
The work will see sensitive improvements to specific listed buildings like the Three Cranes Inn in the High Street and the George Wright Building on Snail Hill as well as £1.4m-worth of development work on public space in the High Street and Minster Yard. |
