Revamp planned for Birmingham council buildings

Plans to transform Birmingham City Council's property portfolio to make it fit for the 21st century will be on the agenda when proposals for a new office building are presented to Cabinet on October 27.

Cabinet members will be asked to approve the submission of a planning application for one of the first new sites to be developed through the project, a new 180,000 square foot office building on council-owned land on Woodcock Street, Aston.

The proposal, an element of the wider Central Administrative Buildings (CAB) programme - part of the council's Working for the Future Business Transformation workstream - will see the local authority revolutionise its administrative buildings in partnership with Service Birmingham, through a combination of modernisation and replacement.

Once complete the programme will leave the authority with a stock of entirely modern, green and efficient buildings, which provide the optimum working environment for staff and aid the delivery of first-class customer services, saving £100m over 25 years.

This is underlined by the work to date on the proposals for Woodcock Street, which have been developed to ensure any completed building would achieve an "excellent" BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) rating.

Cllr Neville Summerfield, cabinet member for regeneration, said: "The provision of new ergonomic and energy efficient office accommodation is absolutely essential if the city council is to continue improving services at the rapid rate of the last few years.

"Improving our property portfolio through schemes such as the one proposed for Woodcock Street, will enable us to continue to increase efficiency on a long-term basis.

"Through best practice in design and space planning, we will ensure employees will have office space in which they are proud to work and which will enable new agile ways of working."
