Plymouth city council has given the green light for what will be the tallest building in southwestern England.

The council has approved plans by local practice, Architects Design Group (ADG), and the £75m project will go out to tender early next year.

Under proposals, the 101-metre high tower developed by Devington homes and distinctly named Oceanique, will deliver 172 residential apartments, just over 2,000 square metres of retail and restaurants, over 6,000 square metres of office space and a 123-bed hotel with conference and leisure facilities.

Ian Potts, managing director of ADG told B&E online that it was an enormous achievement for a local firm to be working on such a major scheme.

He said: “We find that in this kind of market these things can fly over our heads. In the past big schemes like this would have been developed by a London firm or a developer from elsewhere who would have flown in their own design teams. The big thing for us is that we are able to be working on some of the major schemes in the city. "

Construction will begin in the autumn of 2008.
