Oxfordshire Highways win roundabout award E-mail

Oxfordshire Highways has won an award for the 'hamburger' roundabout in Headington that has significantly cut queue lengths at peak times on one of Oxford's busiest stretches of road.

Oxfordshire Highways received the engineering excellence award from the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) for the innovative way the scheme made extra space to cut queues.

The award came in the ICE awards 'Major Projects' category.

The scheme was completed in late 2006 creating extra road capacity by slicing the A40 westbound through the centre of the roundabout, giving rise to the nickname 'hamburger'. Some of the extra capacity is dedicated to bus priority as the roundabout carries more buses than any other junction on Oxford's ring road.
