The £19m National Indoor BMX Centre in East Manchester moved a step closer today after the North West development agency put up £8m towards the cost.

Manchester City Council has already granted £8.55m and Sport England has contributed £3m to the site, with the NWDA now agreeing to provide the final £8m.

Planning permission for the centre, which will be built on the Sportcity site, was granted in September. The area is already home to the Manchester Velodrome, the National Squash Centre, the Regional Tennis Centre, the Regional Athletics Arena and the English Institute of Sport North West Support Centre, together with six regional or national governing bodies.

The BMX Centre will work alongside the Velodrome to become the home of the Great Britain cycling squad across a wide range of disciplines and form a National Cycling Centre.

The centre will include a link building to the Velodrome and will comprise of a 155,000 sq ft building incorporating a 100m x 70m cycling track.
