The Rocket Junction in Liverpool, the main arterial route into the city, has been transformed into a landmark gateway ahead of Liverpool's spell as the European Capital of Culture 2008. A £1.2m scheme has drastically revamped a once brutal grey flyover structure into possibly Britain’s first major piece of highways art. The structure has been cleaned, painted, and LED lighting strips and artwork added to the superstructure. The bridge piers have been framed in steel and now house a range of discreet lighting that will help illuminate the dominant structure, to provide an enhanced night-time appearance for the gateway. The 3m wide ‘08’ Capital of Culture logos will shine from the bridge piers while images will be projected onto the underside of the flyover – a first for a UK highways structure. The official launch of the flyover illumination will take place tomorrow.
Mouchel, working on behalf of Liverpool Land Development Company, has designed and managed the scheme. |
