Consulting group Mouchel has completed a review of the Isle of Man's sewage treatment master plan, known as IRIS (Integrated Recycling of the Island's Sewage). The Isle of Man government's Department of Transport is now moving forward on Mouchel's recommendations, contained within a review of the island's sewage treatment strategy which has the potential to save the Isle of Man more than 15 per cent of the original cost, by taking them through Tynwald – the Isle of Man's parliament. The Isle of Man government asked Mouchel to carry out an independent review of the IRIS strategy in August 2006. The IRIS programme has already been constructed for the southern and eastern parts of the Island. The next stage of IRIS aims to complete an 'All-Island' solution to sewage treatment by collecting and treating sewage from the northern and western parts of the island. The main recommendation of the review was that the island should implement a regional sewage treatment strategy, as opposed to the existing centralised treatment strategy. Mouchel technical director Chris Jones explains: "IRIS is unique – the original strategy of pumping sewage up to 45km for treatment was developed in the 1990s. Recent legislative changes, better understanding of the environment, developments in sewage treatment technology and increasing energy costs make regional treatment a more viable option." |
