Demolition has started of the iconic former Sheffield Hallam University Student Union – Nelson Mandela Building, opposite the city’s train station. The building one of the best known in the city is being demolished to make way for a new 4 Star Hotel and 70,000 sq ft of Grade A offices. The demolition contract has been Controlled Demolition Group who will complete the demolition and site clearance by mid-December. The site, owned by Yorkshire Forward, has already received outline planning permission for a mixed use development. David Fletcher, director of Business Investment for Creative Sheffield, said: “This site, which will be known as No1 Sheaf Square, is at a major gateway site, opposite the mainline Sheffield railway station on the prime arterial route into the city. It is destined to become a key site and will add to the huge impact on both the face and the fortune of the city centre that the Heart of the City project has had.”
