Laing O' Rourke is expected to begin building Liverpool Football Club's new Stanley Park Stadium before the end of December.

The contractor will take possession of the site at the start of the month, following planning consent.

The projected cost of building the stadium is thought to have risen from £270m to about £400m, but the figures are still unclear and are likely to depend on the final design spec for areas such seating and coporate facilities.

The stadium designed by American architect HKS is expected to hold 60,000 fans but depending on improvements to the local transport infrastructure could be extended to 80,000 in the near future.

The central importance of the Kop has also been recognised with a hugely increased capacity to 18,000 seats in a single tier stand.

The stadium represents an investment of around £300m by the Club in North Liverpool.

The stadium is scheduled to open in 2010.
