A £4.5m school built by Kier for Leeds City Council has beaten off international competition to win an award from the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). The New Bewerley Community School and Children's Centre in Beeston built by Yorkshire-based contractor Kier Northern, part of the Kier Group, received the judges' special award for its inclusive environment, beating off international schemes in places such as Belgium and Hong Kong. At the award ceremony held at the Dorchester Hotel in London, Kevin McCloud, host of television's Grand Designs, presented the award to the councils in house design team Strategic Design Alliance, who partnered Kier Northern on the scheme. The New Bewerley school has a unique circular design of classrooms spiralling from a central hall. The 78-place children's centre has aftercare facilities and a Specialist Inclusive Learning Centre. It provides learning opportunities and facilities for the whole community. Chairman of the judges, Simon Pott said: crafting an inclusive environment, the team behind New Bewerley has provided a facility which can help tackle economic, social and environmental discrimination and inequality in the area." The school has already won five national and regional awards. These are:
• Three regional trophies awarded by RICS for its innovative design - the Yorkshire Regeneration and Community Benefit categories and the Project of the Year award. Architectural manager of the Strategic Design Alliance, Tony Scott said: "I'd like to congratulate all members of the multi-discipline team for their hard work, dedication and commitment, which has paid off with this year's stream of awards."
