Kier’s £36.7m refurbishment to London’s Middlesex Guildhall has been highjacked by demonstrators protesting over the EU Treaty.
At approximately 2.20am this morning, two men scaled the group’s tower crane in Parliament Square revealing banners proclaiming, “Give us our vote” and “Referendum”. The crane is on the site of Kier Group’s development arm, Kier Property. Wallis is the main contractor. A spokeswoman from London’s Metropolitan Police told B&E online that the police department is currently in negotiations with the two protestors. The spokeswoman said: “We’re currently talking to them and trying to get them down. There have been no road closures. It is a very large crane at the rear of the Middlesex Guildhall building.” The protest comes just two days before MPs are set to vote on a Conservative amendment to the EU Treaty Bill, calling for a referendum on the issue. Work on the Middlesex Guildhall is expected to be complete by Spring 2009 with the Supreme Court on target to open by the start of the legal year in October 2009. |
