On the last day of National Construction Week, 150 of London’s talented Telfords are undertaking the challenge of an Engineering your Future day on 12th October 2007 to find out how to become engineers of the future. The event will be held at the historic Institution of Civil Engineers building in Westminster as part of a series of ‘Engineering Your Future’ (EYF) events designed to introduce sixth form pupils to the disciplines, routes and engineers within the profession. EYF is the only careers event of its kind to have the backing of the UK’s leading engineering groups and institutions. It has been organised by the Institution of Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) in conjunction with the Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), Institution of Engineering Technology (IET), Institute of Marine Engineering Science and Technology (IMarEST) and the government backed STEMNET. This is the fourth event to be held in London this year and follows the extremely successful series held in March during National Science and Engineering Week at the IMarEST and IMechE headquarters and Rosedale College, Northwest London. EYF Chairman, Chris Lowther, said: “These events are a wonderful opportunity for sixth form students to find out more about the people and different careers in Engineering. Feedback from the students shows that more students are choosing Engineering degrees after spending the day with the Institutions” 2007 is the 250th anniversary of the birth of Thomas Telford’. Telford was the first president of the Institution of Civil Engineers and fostered many of the world’s greatest engineers. Current ICE President, Professor Quentin Leiper, said “I hope that EYF will continue Telford’s legacy of ensuring that the very best students enter the profession and continue to solve the world’s biggest problems”. |
