Health City plan for East Manchester E-mail
Friday, 31 October 2008
Having failed to secure a super casino for East Manchester, the city council has emerged with a new idea: a health city.

The ambitious £650m HealthCity scheme will see the UK's first private sector-led, multi-purpose health mall built in east Manchester.

The project, which has been approved by the council, will also include a tree-lined footbridge over the Mancunian Way, allowing central Manchester to expand beyond the ring road and into Ardwick.

Almost 2,000 family homes as well as office, hotel, retail and leisure space, a high street, public square and landmark New York-style building will shape the new quarter, which will cover 38 acres to the east of Piccadilly Station.

Irish developer Grangefield Estates is behind the scheme, named Chancellor Place.

Grangefield says the scheme could be delivered within five years.
