Culture Secretary James Purnell has been promoted to Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, following the resignation of Peter Hain.

Mr Purnell, 37, had been culture secretary since Gordon Brown became prime minister in June last year.

Mr Hain quit the Cabinet after the Electoral Commission called in the police to investigate allegations surrounding donations to his failed campaign for Labour deputy leader last year.

The minister's department oversees the Health and Safety Executive.
