The Government has announced approval of London Thames Gateway Development Corporation’s Corporate Plan for 2008-11.

LTGDC plans to invest £235m over the next three years to bring forward regeneration projects in the Lower Lea Valley and London Riverside – some of the most disadvantaged parts of east London. The planned investment in eight key locations will deliver an additional 8,200 new homes and 7,900 new jobs and attract up to £1.8bn in private sector investment.

Much of the investment will benefit local people through the provision of new infrastructure and improved access to local services. Complementing the investment in physical infrastructure LTGDC is working with education providers to provide facilities and ensure skills delivery meets local needs. LTGDC is also working closely with partners to ensure that the benefits of the 2012 Games are maximised for the local community and the Olympic Park fully integrates into the surrounding communities after 2012.

Lorraine Baldry, chairman of LTGDC says, “This investment in the London Thames Gateway demonstrates our continued commitment, and that of Government to make significant changes to the quality of life in east London.  Regeneration of the Lower Lea Valley and London Riverside means more than just building houses. Our plans for the next three years to drive forward schemes which will create a sense of place and belonging for local people and an environment that attracts new residents and businesses to settle.”

Housing and Planning Minister Caroline Flint said: “I am delighted to approve the London Thames Gateway Development Corporation’s action plan to create jobs and homes for thousands of East Enders.

“We want to see real change in these parts of East London, which is why the Government is backing these plans with millions of pounds of investment.

“Throughout the London Thames Gateway a lot has been achieved but now we need to see a gear change. Today’s plan is part of a comprehensive programme which will bring a real acceleration in momentum to maximise the opportunities the Gateway brings.”
