Gateshead plans new football stadium

Gateshead Football Club have purchased the land intended for the building of their new stadium, which they hope can help push them into the Football League.

The conference side plans to build the 9,000-capacity stadium on a derelict site opposite Gateshead Civic Centre which previously housed North Durham Cricket and Rugby Club.

The club hope to move to the new Prince Consort Road stadium, which will meet the minimum standard required to host Football League matches, in time for start of the 2011-12 season.

Gateshead currently play their games at the town's International Stadium, predominantly an athletics venue that they rent from the town's council.

The new ground would form part of Newcastle/Gateshead’s 2018/2022 World Cup bid as a training base.
