Everton Football Club's bid to build a new stadium in Kirkby has suffered a setback after Liverpool Council objected to the plan.

Liverpool City Council's planning committee has objected to Everton Football Club and Tesco's £400m Kirkby scheme in Knowsley near Liverpool, on the grounds that it breaks planning policies.

Sefton council also voted to oppose the plan.

It is thought that St Helens and West Lancashire will also formally object.

As well as a 55,000- seat stadium for Everton FC, the scheme will also include 540,000 sq ft of retail, including a 110,000 sq ft Tesco Extra store and 50 further retail units.

Knowsley Council's planning committee are due to meet on Monday and officials have recommended the application be approved, stating the regeneration benefits outweigh conflicts with planning policies.
