Everton FC stadium kickstarts tram plan E-mail

A planned tram route in Merseyside which would link Kirkby to Liverpool City Centre, could be back on track if controversial plans to build a new stadium for Everton FC in Kirkby go ahead.

Everton Football Club is hoping to build a new 50,000 capacity stadium, which would involve moving the club from Liverpool to nearby Knowsley.

The tram route, which was scrapped in 2005, by the then Transport Secretary, Alistair Darling, due to spiralling costs, would be situated close to the new stadium. As a result Merseytravel believe that having a stadium on the tram route creates a stronger business case for reviving the project.

Neil Scales, director general and chief executive of Merseytravel said:

“We believe that there is a strong case for the tram route if the stadium goes ahead. However at the moment that is dependent on whether the stadium does indeed go ahead and that is reliant on Kirkby residents as well as Everton supporters.

We are currently working with the Everton Board and Knowsley Council on a plan and we will wait and see what decision is made”

Over 30,000 of the clubs supporters and shareholders are due to take part in a vote on whether the football club move from Goodison Park should go ahead.
