The new £50m Queen Margaret University College in Edinburgh has scooped first prize of The Concrete Centre Award for Sustainability 2006.

The building uses thermal mass and natural ventilation to reduce summer and winter energy consumption. The Concrete Centre claimed this saves ceiling materials and installation costs and makes the electrical services installation simpler.

The energy that is required to operate the building will come from a combined heat and power plant burning waste from local forests. The campus also features a sustainable urban drainage system pond to capture rainwater draining off roofs and paved areas.

Andy Frost, sustainability manager for The Concrete Centre said: "This is an exemplary project that not only shows how the immediate environmental impact of construction can be mitigated but also how the long-term operational impact of the buildings can be reduced. It is a well deserved winner."
