Plans by Donald Trump to build a £1bn golf resort and complex in Aberdeenshire have today been thrown out by councillors. The US property tycoon's planning application for Trump International Golf Links Scotland was rejected by members of Aberdeenshire Council's infrastructure services committee. This comes after outline planning permission for the 1,400-acre development at Menie Estate near Balmedie was earlier approved by the authority's Formartine area committee.
But members of the more powerful infrastructure committee voted against the proposal. The votes were tied at seven each, with the deciding vote going to Councillor Martin Ford as chair of the committee, who took the decision to refuse permission. The proposed resort included two championship golf courses, a five-star hotel, a golf academy, nearly 1,000 holiday homes and 500 private houses. Supporters of the project say it will inject £60 million into the Scottish economy, boost tourism and create 6,000 jobs.
However there have been concerns centred around the fact that part of the resort would to be built on a site of special scientific interest (SSSI) and the effect it would have on sand dunes and rare plant species. The Trump organisation will now have to consider whether or not to appeal the decision to Scottish ministers.
