A state-of-the-art £21.5m digital media centre is to be built in Leicester after it was given the green light by city councillors.

The council's ruling Cabinet has agreed to invest up to £7m in the centre, with the rest of the funding coming partners including the councils development partner Blueprint, the East Midlands Development Agency (emda), Leicester Shire Economic Partnership (LSEP), European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and De Montfort University.

The Digital Media Centre (DMC) will provide three cinema screens, along with a digital exhibition space called 'The Cube'.

It will include 63 high quality city-living apartments, all using the very latest environmental technology to help make the whole scheme environmentally sustainable.

It will also have space for over 68 new businesses, with a café/bar open to the public.

The building would further boost the council's ambitions to turn the St George's area of Leicester into a hub of cultural activity, with the Rafael Vinoly-designed performing arts centre as its centrepiece.

Peter Connelly of Blueprint said: "We are pleased to be working with the city council on this tremendous project. The building design will be unique in Leicester and will assist the regeneration of the city in general and of the Cultural Quarter in particular".

Work is due to start on site later this autumn. The building is expected to open to the public in 2009.
