The Competition Commission (CC) today formally cleared the anticipated acquisition by Wienerberger of Baggeridge Brick. The commission concluded that the acquisition, which brings together the third and fourth largest brick manufacturers in the UK, was not expected to give rise to a substantial lessening of competition. The merger will create a company of sufficient size to compete with the two largest brick producers, Hanson and Ibstock. Industry sources have previously commented that a third large brick producer will introduce competition over prices. In recent years, Wienerberger entered the UK market with the acquisition of thebrickbusiness. The company formerly solely supplied the UK market with its Terca brand manufactured in continental Europe. |
