Clapham plans unveiled E-mail

Groundbreaking plans set to transform Clapham town centre will be unveiled this weekend.

The Future Clapham programme, through a partnership made up of Lambeth Council, Lambeth Primary Care Trust and Cathedral Group will deliver an new library, a new swimming pool, a purpose built health facility, as well as extra housing by 2011.

The launch event to be held on Saturday 15 March marks the first in a series of consultation events.

A number of new and ambitious facilities are planned for the area including:
* Clapham High Street - Mary Seacole House will be demolished and new facilities including a new library, GP surgery and joint service centre will be constructed on the site.
* Clapham Leisure Centre - The new leisure centre, will be on the site of the existing centre on Clapham Manor Street and will feature a 6-lane, 25m swimming pool with movable floor, larger fitness suite, 4-court sports hall, climbing wall and community rooms.
* Old Clapham Library building -The final section of the development will be to develop a community-run centre within the Clapham Old Library building. A budget has been set aside to renovate the building, and the Council is working with a local community group to develop plans.

Jo Negrini, divisional director for Regeneration, said: "The Future Clapham project represents an ambitious and exciting new era for the area. This event will give everyone an opportunity to view the designs for the new Council facilities and to let the developers and Council team know how they would like to see their area and facilities developed."
