Glasgow planners are today considering plans for a huge £100 million extension of the city main Buchanan Galleries shopping centre. The scheme seeks to increase the size of the mall by 65 per cent to over 1m sq ft. This will be achieved mainly by demolishing the existing 2000- space car park and building on it. A new 3000-space car park above Buchanan Street bus station, at the rear of the Galleries, would then be built which would be linked to the mall by a pedestrian bridge. The plan has drawn 13 letters of objection from groups, including Glasgow Caledonian University, Strathclyde Partnership for Transport and Transport Scotland. Despite the objections, Glasgow City Council executive director of development and regeneration, Steve Inch, has recommended approval of the scheme. |
