Members of construction union Ucatt, working for Birmingham City Council, will stage a 24-hour strike tomorrow. Last month, workers decided to strike over the council's decision to impose new contracts on the vast majority of its workforce. Ucatt claims that the new arrangements will result in employees facing large reductions in their pay. As well as Ucatt, members of Unison, Unite and the GMB will take part in the strike. Unions said about 20,000 of the council's 22,000-strong workforce had voted to take joint industrial action in protest at having the new contracts imposed on them without a collective agreement. It is thought the strike will close schools, museums and libraries and hit some council services. In a statement Birmingham City Council said: "In light of the industrial action planned by the trade unions in Birmingham on Tuesday 5 February, regrettably the city council has had to take the decision to suspend a number of non-critical services." The council added that every effort was being made to keep as many services and buildings open as possible. |
