Birmingham Airport ditches second runway

Birmingham International Airport has announced that it will not be going ahead with its second runway until at least 2030.Instead it will extend its existing runway by 405 metres, allowing it to accommodate larger aircraft and offer more long-haul flights.

The airport, which had 9.2m passengers in 2006, expects to have 27.2m in 2030. But the predicted growth in passenger numbers has been reduced from earlier forecasts of 31.7m.
