The application is the first sign that the city's notorious oversupply and student and private apartments may be easing.

The £25m tower will have 33 storeys of student accommodation topped by a penthouse apartment. It will be the second tallest residential building in the city after the Beetham Tower.

The building has been designed by local architects Hodder and Partners.
