Albert Bridge undergoes restoration study

A London landmark is undergoing a detailed design study to secure its future.A review of Albert Bridge is being carried out by Kensington and Chelsea Council to ensure the bridge can cope with the weight and volume of today's traffic.

The study aims to explore the engineering challenges faced in restoring the bridge and safeguarding its future.

In response to the need to secure the bridge, weight and other restrictions have been imposed.

Deputy leader Cllr Daniel Moylan said:

"Albert Bridge has no better friend than the Council which has looked after it lovingly for decades.

"The bridge was built for the horse and carriage but years of use by cars and lorries have taken their toll.

"We have installed low-level barriers on the bridge to protect it from further damage - this does affect the appearance of the bridge, but it is a necessary evil.

He added:

"Transport for London has provided funding for us to develop detailed designs for strengthening the bridge and we hope this means they will go on and fund the restoration."
