£60m M4 upgrade gets go ahead E-mail

A £60m package of improvements to relieve congestion and improve access to the M4 for Reading and Wokingham has been given the go-ahead, Transport Minister Rosie Winterton announced today.

The package of improvements comprises a large-scale reconstruction of the junction 11 gyratory and the A33 south of the junction, together with better facilities for pedestrians, cyclists and buses. Junction 11 of the M4 is the main point of access to the centre of Reading from London and for local communities in Wokingham via the A33, providing an important strategic link for many nationally important businesses.

Junction 11 is heavily used by traffic accessing the significant developments adjacent to the junction, as well as local residents and suffers from a higher than average accident rate.

Rosie Winterton said:

"These improvements will not only relieve congestion around this busy junction - improving access to the M4 for the people of Reading and Wokingham - but will also help boost economic growth and the regeneration of surrounding areas.

"The Government is committed to investing in transport and to easing congestion in our towns and cities."
