Westminster Council plans to build more than 500 affordable homes in Central London in what will be the biggest house-building project carried out by an English local authority for at least 15 years.

The council's arm's-length management organisation, Citywest Homes has been given £36m by the Housing Corporation to build housing on brownfield sites across the London borough.

All together 246 homes for social rent will be built as well as 104 shared ownership flats and 69 one-bedroom starter homes.

To help finance the scheme Citywest Homes will build another 107 homes that will be sold at the market price.

The project which is expected to take four years to complete will be built in areas including Hyde Park, Little Venice, Bayswater, Paddington, Queen's Park and Edgware Road.

It is thought that Citywest Homes will begin consultation with residents in the next few weeks and bring the schemes forward within 12 months.
